Beavers blank Russell-with audio
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On Senior Night at Darner Field, many of the seniors found the end zone, one for the first time this year. Scott City scored 27 first quarter points en route to a 54-0 win over the Russell Broncos Thursday night in the District 15 finale.
The Beavers scored on their first eight possessions of the game. Senior Brayden Strine started the scoring off with a two-yard run with 9:50 left in the first quarter. Tre Stewart booted in the extra point to make it 7-0. Martin Gough found the end zone with 7:05 remaining in the period from eight yards out, and it was 13-0 after the missed extra point. Scott City’s lone passing score of the night came from 3:25 remaining in the quarter on a 25-yard toss from Trey O’Neil to Chris Pounds, and the Stewart PAT pushed the score to 20-0. Two plays after Russell recorded their first first down of the game, Paco Banda recorded his first interception of the season, and took it to the Bronco one. He would score from a yard out on the next play, and it was 27-0 with 24 seconds left in the opening quarter after the Stewart extra point.
Scott City scored three more times in the second quarter, as Gough found the end zone for the second time with 8:46 left before the break from a yard out, and the Stewart kick made it 34-0 Beavers. Chantz Yager made it 40-0 with 5:04 left on a 20-yard run. Senior tight end Warren Kropp on the next drive lined up as the fullback on first and goal from the four yard line, and plunged in from four yards out with a minute 18 left before halftime for his first touchdown of the season. Sloan Baker made the extra point to give the Beavers a 47-0 halftime lead.
The final score of the night came with 10:02 remaining in the third quarter during a running clock, as Wyatt Kropp scored from 17 yards out. Tre Stewart’s PAT made it 54-0. With second teamers in for Scott City, Russell sustained one nice drive in the game, but a fumble forced by the Beavers stalled the drive inside the 20, and Scott City would preserve their second shutout in three games, and the third this year.
James Jurgens ended up the leading rusher for Scott City, with 58 yards on five carries. Trey O’Neil was 3-of-3 for 59 yards, and a touchdown pass to Chris Pounds. The Beavers punted twice and did not turn the ball over for the first time this season.
Russell was led in rushing by Kiefer Craig, who had 24 yards on seven carries. The Broncos had only five first downs, two turnovers and 79 yards of total offense.
Since becoming a Class 3A Football team in 2006, Scott City has qualified for the playoffs all eight seasons, won six district titles, five of those consecutively, and are 22-2 in district competition.
Up next for Scott City (8-1) will be a Bi-District game vs Lakin Tuesday night at 7 pm at Darner Field. Lakin is 5-4 on the year, after their 48-7 win Thursday night at Southwestern Heights.
Russell ends their season at 1-8.
