DODGE CITY, Kan. —
We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of our bull bison, Brutus, on the morning of Friday, May 17th. Brutus had been showing signs of age–related health issues, and while these issues were being successfully managed by zoo staff, his health began to decline earlier in the week rapidly. It was decided by the zoo and veterinary staff that it was time to say goodbye and let him go with dignity.
Brutus was born at Wright Park Zoo in the late 1990s and was suspected to be around 25 years old; his exact birthday is unknown. He has been a great joy for staff and guests alike and sired over ten calves in his lifetime. His memory will be preserved at Boothill Museum, where a part of Brutus will be displayed to continue to educate visitors for years to come.
Brutus is survived by our bison cow, Aster, and two new additions, Thorn and Berry. Staff will keep a close eye on the herd as they adjust. Brutus will be greatly missed by everyone, and we thank you for your support during this difficult time.
