William L. (Lee) Lewis
William L. (Lee) Lewis, age 88,died Monday June 8, 2015 at the Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton Kansas. He was born September 8, 1926 in Jetmore, Kansas to John and Hazel (Bayse) Lewis. Bill was drafted into the United States Army his senior year of high school, serving his country from December 11, 1944 until November 14, 1946. His basic training was at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He was stationed at Camp Lee, Virginia and finished out his service at Camp Adair in Oregon where he was a cook. After his discharge, Bill returned to Jetmore and finished his last semester of high school.
Bill married Phyllis Jean Bretz on April 1, 1953 in Dighton. They started their married life in Dighton but also lived in Wichita, Montezuma and Garden City, Kansas. They moved to Amarillo, Texas and lived there for 37 years. Bill spent most of his adult life in the livestock business. He was mainly an order buyer but also fed cattle and sold feeders. Phyllis was a vital partner in this business. Phyllis died on September 1, 2011 and Bill moved back to Dighton in November, 2011. Bill was also preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters in law, Gwendolyn Duncan, Aleen Ard and LaVona Owens and 1 niece, Maellen Owens. Bill was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. Survivors include many friends.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Dighton with Rev. Aerii Smith and Pastor Alana Chapman presiding. Burial will follow at Dighton Memorial Cemetery with graveside rites by American Legion Post #190 and the Kansas Army Reserve National Guard. Calling hours are 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church or the Lane County Historical Society in care of the funeral home.
