Wichita Trinity takes two from Scott City
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday night’s opening games of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic for Scott City against Wichita Trinity were going to be a pair of good early season tests for the Beavers. At the end of the night, it ended up being a tough one for both the Scott City teams, as they Lady Beavers fell 58-51, while the boys lost 56-38.

Scott City couldn’t have asked for a better start, jumping out to a 6-0 lead two minutes into the game. Wichita Trinity would go on a 9-0 run to lead 11-8 with 2:48 remaining in the first quarter, before the Lady Beavers answered back with six of the final eight points of the quarter to go up 14-13 after the first quarter. The Lady Knights would lead by as many as five at 25-20 with 5:24 remaining before halftime. Scott City (1-1) would close the half out with a 10-4 run to take a 30-29 lead.
Wichita Trinity would start the second half with an 8-0 run, and never trail the rest of the way. More most of the second half, the Lady Knights would answer every Scott City basket. The Lady Beavers trailed 43-36 after the third quarter. When they were down 47-38, their largest deficit of the night, Scott City would score the next six points to pull to within 47-44 with 4:24 left. They had a couple opportunities, but couldn’t get the shot to fall at the right time. Wichita Trinity (1-1) closed the game down the stretch at the foul line, taking home the 58-51 win.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was sophomore Austin Broadie with 16 points, while Lauren Matthews added 12 and Ashlyn Bigelow had 10. Wichita Trinity was 10-19 at the foul line, and had 29 turnovers. Scott City was led by Emily Weathers with 22 points, while Brynn McCormick finished with 10. The Lady Beavers were 9-14 from the free throw line, and had 23 turnovers.
Wichita Trinity has now won all six meetings in the series.

Wichita Trinity Boys 56, Scott City 38
Scott City would hang with the No. 3 ranked team in Class 4A four three and half quarters, but couldn’t stay with them in the end. The Beavers would start out leading 7-2 with 3:21 left in the first quarter, before Wichita Trinity scored 10 straight points to go up 12-7. Scott City scored the final five points of the period to tie the game at 12 after the first quarter of play. The Beavers would not score a two-point basket over the next 15-plus minutes of game time. Wichita Trinity (2-0) used runs of five and seven to lead 24-18 with 1:06 left before halftime. Scott City would score the last four points from the foul line to pull to within two at the break at 24-22.
Scott City would tie the game in the first minute of the second half on a pair of free throw at 24, but that would be the last they would tie or lead. Wichita Trinity scored the next 11 points over the next four minutes to lead 35-24 with 2:16 left in the third quarter. The Beavers would also have a nine-minute field goal drought that would end late in third quarter. Scott City (1-1) pulled to within four on a pair of and-one’s at 37-33, and trailed 39-33 heading into the fourth quarter. The Beavers would pull to within 43-38 with 4:46 left, but didn’t score the rest of the night, as the Knights would end the game with 13 consecutive points.
Nate Adler led the way for Wichita Trinity with 16 points, while Andrew Davis had 12 and Caden Vanlandingham added 11. The Knights were 7-10 at the foul line, and won the rebounding battle 39-17. Hunter Yager had 15 points on five three’s and Joe Evans added nine. The Beavers were 9-13 at the free throw line, and finished with 14 turnovers.
It’s the second straight win in the series for Wichita Trinity. Scott City leads the series 4-2.

Scott City will host Coronado, Colorado on Friday. The Lady Cougars lost to Garden City 39-22 and are 1-3 on the year, while the Coronado boys are also 1-3 after a loss of 60-46. Wichita Trinity will face Liberal at Garden City Community College Friday night. The Lady Redskins beat Dumas, TX 51-31, while the Redskin boys won on a buzzer beater over Dalhart, TX 72-70.
