West holds off East in Shrine Bowl
Emporia, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a defensive battle in the 39th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl at Welch Stadium in Emporia Saturday night. The West would win its seventh straight over the East with a 14-7 victory.
Wichita Heights quarterback Matt Reed found Abilene product Collin Sexton for a 54-yard touchdown pass with 7:27 remaining in the first quarter. After the two-point conversion, it was 8-0 for the West. The East would pull to within 8-7 at the 7:45 mark before halftime when Blue Valley Northwest quarterback Garrett Fugate hooked up with Centralia’s Michael Glatzack on a 55-yard bomb. The final score would come in the fourth quarter, when Hutchinson’s Ja’Mon Cotton found the end zone from nine yards out with 9:01 remaining to make it 14-6. Total offense overall was fairly even between the two teams. The West finished with 255 yards, as they had 133 through the air and 122 on the ground, while the East finished with 229 total yards, including rushing for minus-one yard.
