I”m not sure anyone saw it coming-well with the exception of Buffaloes Head Coach Brian Hill.

Garden City’s 35-0 demolition of previously unbeaten and 5th-ranked Hays, pushed the Buffs back into contention in the Western Athletic Conference. But even more so-it proved that Hill’s words are a powerful force among his veteran club.

“We challenged these guys and they responded,” said Hill, who delivered a fiery pregame speech the day before last week’s contest. “But we can’t get too high off this win, and these kids have to know that.”

Hill’s message should be taken as literal as any other words he’s ever spoken. Why? Well the team they’re facing in week five is the top-offensive club in the state of Kansas-that includes all classes. And we can say this with virtual certainty: This is not the same Redskin team that Garden City destroyed the previous few seasons. Proof be told-they ended a 19-game conference losing streak last week in hostile territory.

One of the main reasons for that is the emergence of senior quarterback Britton Abbott. The coach’s son has tossed 12 touchdowns to only one interception in four games-11 of those finding their way to senior Trenton Hammond.

Hammond has been around this program for four years, but one of the state’s fastest men has blossomed in his final season. His 36 receptions for 736 yards is tops for all classes. So is his 20 yard per reception average. Let’s just say that Dominic Dingle’s secondary will be severely tested tonight.

For Garden City, their offense is no slouch. The Buffaloes are ranked second in the WAC in that category; their passing attack is second.

“Greyson and myself are just as deadly a combo as Abbott and Hammond,” Tramp said following practice on Thursday.

And while the numbers aren’t the same, the junior has backed up his words on the field. So has Greyson Tempel.

The two-year starter has thrown six touchdown passes and hasn’t been picked off in two games; that’s more than 40 pass attempts. He’s also killing opposing defenses with his legs. The senior has racked up nearly 500 yards on the ground-good for third best in the conference.

Series Notes: Liberal leads 47-44-3; Bufaloes have won five in a row

The Hugoton Eagles and Scott City Beavers enter tonight’s ballgame with identical records: 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Great West Activities Conference play.

Last week saw opposite outcomes for both teams. Hugoton won their third straight game with a 56-0 shutout of the Colby Eagles, while Scott City dropped their first regular season game in 41 attempts with a 25-6 setback to the Ulysses Tigers on the road. The Eagles are a run-heavy team, rushing for 343 yards per game in their first four games, while the Beavers are more balanced, passing for 190 yards and running for 140 yards per contest.

Scott City has won the last three games in the series, outscoring the Eagles by a 39-5 average margin. Last year, the Beavers shut out Hugoton 41-0. This is the first time Hugoton has played Scott City at Darner Field since 2010. Tonight is Homecoming for Scott City

vs.

Holcomb Longhorns (2-2) vs. Colby Eagles (0-3); 7:30 p.m. kickoff (7:00 p.m. pregame on AM 1030 KBUF  with Kirk Hutchinson and Jacob Rungardt)

It’s homecoming week in Holcomb as the Longhorns get set to host the Colby Eagles.

The Longhorns are coming off a 34 – 12 win over previously unbeaten Goodland, while the winless Eagles are coming off a 56 – 0 thrashing at the hands of Hugoton.

The Holcomb offensive attack revolves around quarterback Heath Tucker, who’s averaging 200 yards total offense (passing and rushing) per game. Last week, Tucker threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more. He now has rushed for 7 TDs and thrown for 4 more.

Meanwhile, the Longhorn ‘D’ held a Goodland team that had been averaging nearly 40 points a game to just 12. This week, they face a Colby team that is averaging only 7 points a game and has been shut out twice. Coach Jerry Johnson says the Longhorns can’t overlook the Eagles and must have the same focus they’ve shown the last two weeks.
