Hays, Kan-Week four games are rarely make-or-break games; that’s in a normal year. But this is anything but a normal year for Brian Hill’s team.

Garden City will try and avoid a 1-3 start Friday night when they hit the road for a conference showdown with Hays.

The Buffaloes are coming off a stinging three-point home defeat to Great Bend. But if you think running only 41 plays and having the ball for only 11 minutes hurts, try having the ball in the final minute, in a tie game, with a chance to win after you defense made a big-time play.

Such was the scenario in 2012 when Garden City’s defense held Hays out of the end zone with under 60 seconds to play only to be right back out there when Greyson Tempel was intercepted by Emilio Mitchell. That turnover set up Alex Delton’s game-winning touchdown.

In 2013, the two teams come in on totally different paths. While Hays’ potent ground game outlasted offensive juggernaut Liberal in week three-giving the Indians a 3-0 start for just the 15th time in the program’s rocky history, the Buffaloes defense was on the field for nearly 40 minutes in a three-point loss to Bo Black. They’ll remember that.

And remember this, when Garden and Hays get together, there’s usually plenty of fireworks.

Series Notes: 37th straight year the two teams are playing; Indians have won six out of the last eight…five of the last seven meetings decided by three points or less

Two longtime rivals meet at Maxwell Field in Ulysses, as the Ulysses Tigers host the Scott City Beavers. Both teams picked up GWAC road wins last Friday night, as Scott City rallied with 10 fourth quarter points to defeat the Holcomb Longhorns 31-28, on a 20-yard field goal by Tim Bolle as time expired.

The Beavers enter tonight’s game with a record of 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Great West Activities Conference. Ulysses has won their last two games, both on the road.

The Tigers rolled the Colby Eagles in their league opener 52-16 last Friday night. Garrett Walters connected with Riley Seger for two touchdown passes in the win.

In last year’s game in Scott City, the Beavers scored 20 first quarter points, and led 29-6 at the break, en route to a 49-13 victory over Ulysses. That was Scott City’s fifth straight win in the series, the longest by either team.

Hugoton will host the Colby Eagles this Friday in a GWAC battle.  Last years match was what could be described as a toss up game going in, but costly 2nd half turnovers gave Colby the win.

Hugoton comes into this weeks matchup averaging over 300 yards of rushing per game. That is combined with a relentless defense that is giving up less than 100 yards per game with 9 sacks and 6 interceptions on the season.

Colby’s offense is led by Josh Matchell who is both their leading passer and rusher on the season.

Some notable statistics for the Hugoton Eagles  Leading Rusher – Ross Davis – 318 yards, Leading Receiver – Nic Frederick – 118 yards

Defensively the Blue Swarm is led by Middle Linebacker Bradley Campbell averaging 12 tackles per game, and Kellen Watkins who has 4 interceptions from his cornerback position.
