Walker nominated for America’s Favorite Crossing Guard Award

GARDEN CITY, KAN. — Many of you have driven by a school at some point in your life early in the morning or in the afternoon and have seen a school crossing guard. Gertrude Elementary School in Garden City is lucky enough to have Doris Walker as their guard.

Walker has been standing guard at the corner of Fair and 11th Street making sure that the elementary school kids get to school safely every morning and make sure they are on their way home safely after school. Walker has been nominated for America’s Favorite Crossing Guard, an award given annually to a school’s crossing guard that is voted on by anyone from across the country.

Voting concludes at midnight on Nov. 30. The top five crossing guards voted on will then go to a panel of judges. The judges will then select a winner out of those five. Safe Kids will come to the winning school to celebrate with a pep rally and celebration. The winning school will receive $10,000, second place will receive $7,500 and the third place winner’s school will receive $5,000.
