Verlyn I. Ginther
Verlyn I. Ginther, 83 died Monday, April 6, 2015 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born December 3, 1931 in Graham County, Kansas the son of Ivan & Hazel (Stephen) Ginther.
Verlyn grew up on the family farm in Graham County. He attended country school before attending and graduating from high school in Hill City in 1949. Verlyn began working in management and as a salesman for an oil field supply company. He continued his career with the oil industry, living in several places before moving to Plainville, Kansas in 1965. Continuing to work, Verlyn also served as a Scout Master while living in Plainville. In 1968 he moved to Garden City and has lived in Garden City since. Shortly after moving to Garden City, Verlyn worked for Henkle Drilling Co. for 27 years as a purchasing agent. He retired in 1999. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, camping, working on cars, spending time on the computer and internet, keeping in contact with friends, and being involved in his grandchildren’s activities.
On August 14, 1949, Verlyn married Barbara Wainwright in Hill City, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include three children Kathleen & husband Bob Taylor of Mission Hills, Ks; Carroll & wife Tammy Ginther of Kalvesta, Ks., and Douglas Ginther of Wichita, Ks.; two brothers Garland Ginther of Fulton, Ks. and Gary Ginther of Goodland, Ks.; three sisters Alwyn Johnson of Wichita, Ks., Sharon Lewis of Idaho Springs, Co., and Jerlyn Cannon of Iola, Ks.; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. Verlyn is preceded in death by his parents; a brother John Ginther; and a sister Darlene Brown.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. David Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family requests memorials to Boy Scouts Troop #108 or to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo both in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
