USD 457 BOE meeting recap

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Monday night USD 457 held a regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting. The board saw a presentation on the new walking trail proposed for Garden City.

The trail will run right by Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center. Board member Jean Clifford she thought the trail would be good for kids.

“I think it’s something that might encourage kids to walk or bike to school and get out and get some exercise,” said Clifford.

For the most part the board seemed to approve of the new trail that will run from Third Street to Campus Drive, North of Pioneer Road. The city commission approved the trail in January.

The board also saw a presentation on the AVID program in it’s first year at the middle schools. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and helps students prepare for college readiness and success.

While the presentation said the numbers weren’t great, Assistant Superintendent Renee Scott spoke highly of the program.

“I have no doubt that the numbers will double,” said Scott, “kids are getting the hang of it, they see the effectiveness and are seeing results in the classroom.”

The board also saw a building presentation from Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center. During that presentation the health portion stated that during the weighing of all students nine students were under weight, 223 were healthy weight, 89 over weight and 156 were obese.

As part of helping students be more healthy the school started Wellness Wednesdays, which allows the teachers to be active with students. The PE teachers also decided to try to become a Fuel Up to Play 60 Touchdown school. The school achieved the goal and was the number 6 school in Kansas out of 30.
