USD 457 Board of Education Meeting September 14, 2020

The USD 457 Board of Education met Monday, September 14th, during a regularly scheduled meeting.  The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street. The meeting was conducted with social distancing protocols to make sure the public, Board members, and school staff involved in the meeting were safe.

The Board recognized Garden City High School senior Adam Kennington who was recently named a semifinalist in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This academically talented high school student has an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $30 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

There were a number of people from the community that came and spoke to the Board about their concerns about the operation levels of the district.  The Board listened to the concerns, but did not take any action at the meeting.

The Board heard a report on Dyslexia Services in the district from Suzette Goldsby-Lewis, Coordinator of Professional Development and Monica Diaz, Coordinator of Language and Literacy.

The Board heard a report on the COVID Response Plan from Glenda LaBarbera, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.

The Board heard a presentation on the district’s Communication Plan from Roy Cessna, Public Information Coordinator and Amanda Harms, Assistant Public Information Coordinator.  The Board of Education recognizes the importance of good communications, a well-informed staff and community, and a planned public relations program for the district.  The Board will vote on the plan at the next meeting.

The Board approved a Clinical Contract Agreement between Garden City Community College and the district for student use of our clinical facilities for the 2020-2021 school year; Kansas After School Enhancement Grant Program by Kansas State Department of Education for the 2020-2021 school year; the Kansas Middle School After School Activity Advancement Grant by Kansas State Department of Education for the 2020-2021 school year; Curriculum Council Items: Comprehensible Input Membership – to enhance current offering of Spanish content at Garden City Alternate Education Center, Basic Art – Remote Learning for Secondary Special Education, Basic PE – Remote Learning for Secondary Special Education, Edgenuity Spanish and French – elective choices for middle school students, and Edgenuity Social and Emotional Classes – elective choices for middle school students.

The Board held an executive session to discuss individual employee performance.  There was no action taken after the executive session.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, September 24, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
