Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) On May 9th the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism issued a health advisory for Lake Scott. After a fish kill at the lake water samples showed that the water has elevated levels of E. coli bacteria. The elevated levels seem to be from the rapid melting of the heavy snowfall from agricultural areas in the watershed.

Officials do expect the natural biological processes in the lake will lower the E. coli levels to normal. Until then KDHE recommends the following precautions:

  • Do not drink lake water.
  • Avoid contact with lake water.
  • Boating, fishing and other activities with minimal contact with water are allowed.
  • Do not allow pets to have contact with lake water.
