Ulysses Stuns Dodge in Two Game Basketball Sweep

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The story was the same for the Dodge City boys and girls basketball teams on Wednesday night when they welcome in Ulysses.  The only thing that changed was how they came about to the same conclusion.

The Demon girls blew a five point lead with a little less than a minute to go dropping a 34-33 in losing six of their last seven, while the boys lost traction in the second quarter being outscored 24-9 and losing 67-57 falling for the eighth straight time.

Game Highlights

 

Dodge overcame a seven point drought in the third quarter in shooting 2-12, but scored 8 points in the final minute going 4 of 4 from the stripe and driving layup and Chidera Okoro’s layup to make a 8-3 run in closing out the quarter.  Alyssa Castilleja’s third three was the only scoring for Ulysses during the stretch.

In the final quarter Dodge City could not seal the deal.  Up 33-28 on Lexi Ontiberos pair of free throws.  Ulysses scored six in a row over the final two seconds on Riley Oligevie’s two free throws, Demon turnover off the inbound, resulting left baseline jumper from Ballesteros, steal by Castilleja and two free throws from Ballesteros to give the Tigers the lead. 

The Demons had one last chance to win it late, but Tia Bradshaw’s wide angle layup down the right edge of the paint was wild in trying to get the shot over the 6-2 Oglevie and the Lady Tigers had their second win over Dodge in the last 15 matchups. 

Ulysses Castilleja scored 14, Ballesteros added 11.  Dodge was led by Tia Bradshaw who scored 8 on 3-13 shooting.

In the boys game, Dodge City jumped out to a 13-11 lead through the first quarter, but Ulysses releasing one guy scored a blistering 24 points in the second quarter and shot 68 percent from the field in the first half at 15-22.

Boys Highlights

The Demons were down 47-26, but made a game of it with a 21 point fourth only to lose by 10 which is their average margin of loss this year. 

Hunter Heath had another terrific game on 11-16 shooting for 23 points for Dodge City.  Tre Pauda lead three Ulysses players in double figures with 19 points on 8-10 from the field.
