Ulysses Runs Over Hugoton 46-14

Ulysses, KS (westernkansasnews.com)  Their schools are 30 miles apart, but the rivalry has been decidedly one sided in football.  Over the past 21 years coming in, Hugoton (1-1) has only beaten Ulysses (2-0) twice.  The last time was a 20-19 win in 2009, a year the Eagles went 10-1.  At least for this year against a younger Eagle team, nothing has changed.

Ulysses used big runs of 49 and 39 yards en route to a five touchdown night by star back Ian Rudzik to beat Hugoton 46-14.  Rudzik even added a defensive touchdown in the second half.

The young Eagles led by five seniors scored first with 7:22 left on a touchdown pass from junior Parker Titus to Zack Leininger for his second touchdown reception of the season.  After that the defending GWAC champion Tigers scored thirty-nine unanswered to end the first half and never looked back.

Rudzik ended the game with 162 rushing and his four rushing touchdown giving him eight for the year and 48 for his career.  It wasn’t all good news for Ulysses.  The Tigers committed for turnovers and lost their senior quarterback Tregg Rodriguez early in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury.

After the game, Hugoton Head Coach Todd Fulton took the loss in stride.

Hugoton travels to Colby next week while Ulysses is on the road at Holcomb in a matchup of two teams predicted to compete for the GWAC championship.
