U.S. Senator Jerry Moran visits Garden City

GARDEN CITY — United States Senator, Jerry Moran visited Garden City on Wednesday afternoon to keynote speak the Garden City Rotary Club meeting. Moran spoke to the 25-plus people in the room about what’s going on in his life and much more in his hour long address.

One of the points Senator Moran spoke to the people about was transportation and his point of view on transportation in southwest Kansas. Senator Moran was recently in Garden City to help finalize a deal with Amtrak.

“I’m anxious to have a conversation with folks in southwest Kansas about Amtrak,” Senator Moran said. “We’ve had some success. Amtrak has agreed publicly and in writing to us that they will not terminate the Amtrak service on the Southwest Chief and not replace the 400 miles from Dodge City to Albuquerque with a bus.”

Senator Moran was happy to be back in the Garden City area and southwest Kansas. Senator Moran is a member of the Rotary Club in Hays.

“I’m pleased to be back in Garden City at Rotary,” Senator Moran said. “This helps me make up for one of my many missed abscenses from my home town club,” he said with a laugh. “It’s an opportunity to help highlight what civic clubs do in a community and how they make a difference.”

The senators are on a break right now from working in the nations capital, so Senator Moran is able to spend more time out and about travelling across the state and hearing more about what the public wants. One of the big topics going on across the nation is the recent Farm Bill that was not passed by Oct. 1.

“The reports I’ve gotten in regards to the farm bill are pretty discouraging,” Senator Moran said. “It’s troublesome to me that we’re not extending the Farm Bill. Maybe that will help keep pressure to get this done.”

Senator Moran seems to think that the Farm Bill may be passed by Dec. 31 after the November election is behind us at that point in time.
