The school district started summer school for elementary through middle school students that received a packet of information that was mailed to them in May.  The focus of summer school will be on Math and English Language Arts content. The content will help students gain confidence and to be successful in helping them build a strong educational foundation and to be prepared for the coming school year. Students will be attending classes at a number of buildings around the school district. They include Abe Hubert, Edith Scheuerman, Florence Wilson, Gertrude Walker, Victor Ornelas, Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center, Charles Stone Intermediate Center, Horace Good, and Kenneth Henderson.

 

The Books on Bus program, better known as B.O.B., will be continuing its summer schedule of visiting various sites in Garden City. B.O.B., will be visiting sites weekly, Monday through Thursday from June until the end of July. The summer bookmobile’s last scheduled visit will be July 29, 2021. The summer meals program will continue to provide free nutritious meals at various locations across the community. The meals are free to anyone under the  age of 18. While meals for youth under 18 are free, adults may purchase a lunch at a cost of $4.00. Mirror tags will be required at the curbside and out of town sites. Look for the yellow flag at the locations. There will be a Board of Education meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Educational Support Center Board Meeting Room. The meeting will be a board retreat for board training. More information can be found at: www.gckschools.com/b_o_e/agenda_minutes_20-21

Saturday, June 19

Stop by the Garden City High School parking lot between 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  to test drive a school bus, interview with the director of transportation and enjoy a lunch between 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. See if driving a school bus would be a career for you. Garden City Public Schools is now hiring school bus drivers for all positions; full-time, part-time, anytime. “We offer a family friendly environment, flexible schedule, competitive wages and paid benefits.” All necessary training will be paid for by USD 457, including preparation for taking your CDL test.

The GCHS Drama staff and students took home three Theatre Kansas Awards on June 11th. When Music Theatre of Wichita canceled their annual Jester Awards this year, Sterling College and Theatre Kansas hosted the Theatre Kansas Awards. This year, 26 schools competed and GCHS recieved 8 nominations for the production of The Little Mermaid.
