Lamar, CO (westernkansasnews.com)-Mass chaoes-that’s how first-year Lady Busters’ Coach Nick Salazar described Lamar’s up-tempo, Grinnell-College mirroring philosophy. What he didn’t expect is how his team responded to it.

12 different Lady Lopes found their way into the score book, including three in double figures as Lamar beat Garden City 72-57 Tuesday night at the Community Wellness Center.

“Hats off to Lamar-first off,” Salazar said. “They run this system and it works,”

That system forced a program-worst 58 Buster turnovers, 31 coming before intermission. In fact, Garden City (0-3) did not run one, half-court, offensive set.

“We have far better players,” Salazar said. “That turnover total is embarrassing.”

Part of Garden City’s problem was they were without sophomore point guard Shauqunna Collins-who missed the game because of an illness.

“We’re not going to make excuses because it’s about who’s on the floor,” Salazar said. “But the two girls backing her (Collins) up tonight weren’t very good in the first half.”

After Garden City scored the game’s first two points, Lamar (1-2) blitzed the Lady Busters with a 19-4 run. By the time the two teams rolled into the locker room, the Lopes had a 2-to-1 shot advantage.

It wasn’t until midway through the second half that Salazar’s bunch finally made the adjustment to Lamar’s full-court trap. The Busters trimmed a 20-point deficit all the way to two with under seven minutes to play. But Allison Gordon’s three sparked a 10-0 Lopes run and put the game out of reach.

Zantaya Davis, who fouled out with 10 minutes remaining in the game, finished with a game-high 16 points and 13 rebounds. She was one of three Garden City players in double figures.

Notes: After shooting under 30 percent in their first two games, the Busters responded with a 19-for-48 showing (.400) from the field…Sandra Davis fell victim to the new hand-check rule–fouling out with 10 points and nine rebounds…Lamar has fired up 290 shots in three games (No. 1 in the country)
