Tough Saturday for Buffaloes in Hays
Hays, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The Garden City boys basketball team stormed back from a 39-22 deficit in the beginning moments of the third quarter, pulled back into it with a 10-0 only to fall 57-53 to Hays in the championship game of the Gerrald Mitchell Hays City Shootout.
The Buffaloes (2-1) could not contain Hays Senior guard Lane Clark who erupted for 18 points including four three pointers. Garden City had their own long distance shooter Mitchell Hernandez. He finished with 13 including three 3-pointers in the second hal.After the game Head Coach Jacy Holloway was pleased with the way his team fought back.
Three Garden City players scored in double figures. Tristan Nanninga poured in 11 and Caleb Tramp had 10 including 8 points in the second half.
The Garden City girls (1-2) used a 13-4 run early, but could not sustain the momentum and were held to 4 third quarter points and Newton (2-1) takes the third place championship in the Hays shootout 41-35.
Jaymie Bernbeck led the Lady Buffaloes with 11 points in the loss. Garden City lost their second straight game after winning their opener Thursday 66-20.
Five Garden City players made the all-tournament team Caleb Tramp, Hunter Delgado, Tristan Nanninga, Taryn Tempel and Jaymie Bernbeck.
Garden City returns home Thursday night to play the Southwest Clarion Inn Classic. The boys open with Denver South and the girls play Trinity Academy of Wichita.
