Top five finish for Buffs golf; top 10 for DCHS

Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-More often times than not, youth movements for high school teams means the start of a rebuilding process. But there is an exception to that rule: The 2014 Garden City boys golf team. 

Playing with two freshman on the squad Taylor Larsen and Logan Durst, the Buffaloes finished fifth in Saturday’s Garden City Invitational.

“It’s not as great as I wanted it to be,” Head Coach Walker Frey said. “But we did some really nice things.”

And even though it wasn’t his best performance, Larsen proved to the difference maker. The freshman followed his 40 on the front nine with a 40 on the final nine holes. The performance was good for an eight over par and a 10th place finish. 

Senior Austin Swender, shook off a rather slow start to finish 12th at 10 over par. 

“We’ve got a lot of good young talent on this team,” Swender said. “I’m just looking forward to the rest of the season and taking it one day at a time.”

Tucker Shiffelbein shot an 80; Logan Durst and 83; Connor Schultz a 91 and Parker Tanner a 92. 

Hutch’s Tyler Wintz won the indivudal showdown with a Saturday best 75. The Salthawks also took who the team title-firing off a 312. Hays was second (319), followed by Guymon (323), Maize (330) and Garden City (332). Dodge placed 8th with a 348. Jace Larsen came in 15th with an 85.
