Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the first year of Class 4A being separate from Class 3-2-1A, it would turn out to be quite the team race in the final day of competition on Saturday inside Salina’s Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

Tonganoxie would lead after day one, and maintain the lead, as they would take the team title, winning by 17 points over runner-up Fort Scott. The Lady Tigers would be in a four-way battle for second place all day Saturday, but rallied in the finals with a major decision to defeat Pratt for the runner-up trophy. Colby would finish in fifth.

From the area, Scott City would place 26th as a team, with two medalists. It’s the first time they had multiple girl medalists. Haylie McDaniel, who is a two-time state qualifier, would place fourth at 110, and three-time state qualifier Ashlyn Rose placed third at 155. Rose won her 100th career match in her first match of the tournament on Friday. Ulysses scored two points, while Holcomb and Hugoton would go scoreless.

Of interesting notes, Clay Center’s Gabrielle Koppes became a four-time state champion with her win at 125 pounds. The GWAC would get two state champions, as Morgan Hills from Colby won at 135, and Goodland’s Destiny Gonzalez became a two-time state champion, avenging a super regional finals loss with a rally to win in overtime at 140 pounds.
