TMP softball ends Scott City’s memorable season

Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Wednesday’s regional semi-final between Scott City and TMP Marian felt like a game that would eventually see the team that would represent the regional at state. The Lady Beavers had aspirations of continuing their historic season. With two wins, they would head to state for the first time in school history. Standing in their was was the tradition-rich Lady Monarchs. In a matchup for the first time since 2010, when the teams were MSAA foes, it was TMP who scored eight of their runs in the first two innings en route to the 12-3 win over Scott City. 

TMP scored four runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of four Scott City errors. They would extend their lead to 8-0 with four runs on four hits in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run double by Bailey Lacy that scored Alison Heglet and Emily Schulte. The Lady Beavers did not reach base until the bottom of the third, as Nancy Wiebe singled to begin the inning. Scott City got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as were able to cut the deficit to 8-3, as Kaitlyn Roberts hit a two-run double. She would score on an RBI single by Wiebe. The score remained unchanged until the sixth, as the Lady Monarchs scored on a Bridge Heinman double to make it 9-3. Scott City had their chance to cut the deficit, but left two runners on. TMP added three runs in the top of the seventh, which secured their spot in the regional final. 

Scott City’s Kaitlyn Roberts took the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work. Nicole Latta gave up four runs on eight hits. The Lady Beavers were led offensively by Nancy Wiebe, who had three hits. Latta and Roberts had two hits each. Scott City had six errors in the game. Alison Heglet picked up the win for TMP Marian, going all seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts. Heglet, Emily Schulte and Julia Werth each had three hits, and Bailey Lacy drove in three runs. 

Scott City finished their season at 18-4, which saw them win the most games in school history. Last year, they won only four games. TMP Marian is 17-6, following their 11-1 rout of Southwestern Heights in five innings in the regional title game. The Lady Mustangs were able to rally from an early deficit to defeat three-win Plainville/Stockton 11-9 in the regional semi-final round.
