Three area wrestlers medal at 4-1A State Tournament
Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Three area wrestlers took part in the second girls state wrestling championships at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina on Friday. And all three wrestlers would find themselves on the podium at the end of the day in the Class 4-1A State Wrestling Tournament.
The highest placer would be Lakin’s Isabell Ortiz. Ortiz wrestled in the 115-pound weight class, and would work her way to the finals, knocking off a state champion from last year Alexis Allen to win Lakin’s first-ever girls state title, winning a 5-0 decision.
A fifth place finish came from Lakin’s Josiah Ortiz at 109 pounds. She entered undefeated on the season, and was upset in the semi finals, and found her way to the fifth place match, where she defeated Chanute’s Reese Clements 8-2.
Cimarron had one medalist in Veronica Greene at 106 poinds. Greene would win her consolation first round match, which guaranteed a top six finish. She would end up in sixth place, losing by fall to Burlingame’s Maliyah Lopez.
Baldwin would win the state championship with 54.5 points, while Pratt was second with 49 and Paola was third with 46 points. Lakin got a seventh place finish with 33 points and Cimarron was 46th with four points.
