Three area teams finish in top 10 in State Track & Field Championships
Wichita, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The second day of the KSHSAA State Track & Field Championships saw Classes 4A and 3A make their way to Cessna Stadium in Wichita on Friday. On a cool day with north winds at around 20 mph, six area teams would compete in the state meet for the first time in two years.
On the boys side, Scott City would be the area’s top team, finishing fifth overall, while Holcomb was sixth in Class 3A. The Beavers were led by Isaac Tarango, who had third place finishes in the 100M and 200M dashes, while Loren Faurot was a state champion in the pole vault. Holcomb’s Zephyn Mason was the 100M champion, and was third in the long jump, and was part of the second place 4x100M relay. Lakin finished 13th overall, Southwestern Heights was 28th, Cimarron was 37th and Hugoton was 45th. Southeast of Saline won Class 3A with 84 points, while Girard was second and Perry-Lecompton was third. In Class 4A, Ulysses placed 27th. Louisburg got past Andale to claim the Class 4A State title.
For the girls, Scott City tied for ninth overall. Kennedy Holstein had a big day, placing fifth in the 800M run, and was part of the state-placing 4×800 and 4x400M relays. Paige Vulgamore closed out her career with a second place finish in the pole vault and was part of the sixth place 4x400M relay. Cimarron was 37th, Southwestern Heights 41st, and Hugoton was 52nd. Smoky Valley won the state title in Class 3A with 85 points, while Eureka was second and Colby tied with Chaparral for third place. Ulysses girls placed 26th in Class 4A, as Andale nearly doubled Paola for the team title, while Eudora was third.
