Three area schools take home cross country titles

Three area schools saw their teams win state cross country titles through the rain on Saturday. At Rim Rock Farm, The Holcomb Longhorn boys won the Class 3A state title, while Garden City boys were Class 6A champions for the first time in school history. In Wamego in Class 1A, the South Gray Lady Rebels repeated as state champions.

Starting in Lawrence at Rim Rock Farm, Class 6A saw the Garden City boys take the state title with 66 points, 35 points better than runner-up Junction City. Dodge City was ninth. Medaling for the Buffaloes were Trevor Fry and Hayden Nemechek, who were ninth and 10th respectively, while Taran Castro was 18th.

6A girls saw Cate Wiese place 11th. Teamwise, Dodge City was 11th and Garden City 12.

Class 3A saw quite a big impression by area runners on the boys side. Holcomb would claim the Class 3A State title with 58 points, while Southeast of Saline was second with 79 points. Lakin was fifth and Scott City took sixth. The Longhorns medaled four individuals in the top 20, as Brody Deniston was second, Landen Leonard was eighth, Jeb Stoppel placed 13th and Weston Baker finished in 18th place. The Broncs had two medalists, as Alex Luce was fourth and Austin Ritsema place sixth. Scott City’s Michael Hermosillo placed 20th.

On the girls side, Scott City placed fifth as a team, and Southwestern Heights was 18th. For area medalists, Cimarron would medal two, as Janae Fugitt placed fourth, and Jyntri Wilson was 11th.

In Wamego, Class 2A boys saw Stanton County finish in eighth place as a team. In the girls race Wichita County’s Joleigh Mazanec took home a medal, finishing in 17th place.

The Class 1A boys race saw the Meade Buffalo boys take home the third place trophy. There were two area medalists, as Spearville’s Evan Martinez was 10th, and Meade’s Alex Zortman took 18th.

For the girls, South Gray repeated as state champions with 34 points, five better than Crest. South Gray would medal two girls, as Kylie Stapleton was fourth, and Jacee Deges was eighth.Greeley County’s Jailyn Brandl placed 11th.
