The GCCC College Players to Present “Students 4 Students” on Oct. 18 & 19

[Garden City, KS, Oct. 9, 2019–] The College Players of Garden City Community College are proud to present a unique variety show entitled Students 4 Students. The evening will feature original pieces prepared for competition at GCCC’s upcoming appearance in The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). The performance will include music, choreography, and plays written by GCCC students and by GCCC Theater Director, Phil Hoke. Performances will be held on October 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Auditorium, and are free and open to the public.

“We compete against graduate programs in the region, and one way to stand out is to ensure that the work we promote is original,” Explains Phil Hoke.

Among the pieces set for the performance are two, 10-minute concert readings of original plays. Monica Rose’s Love is Sin, which was submitted at the KCACTF last year, and Steven Wade Freeman’s Purple Popsicles, which is being submitted this year.

“Last year was really inspiring,” Monica Rose shares. “When we got to Sioux Falls, it became clear that theatre was a real profession and had a future that I could contribute to. It’s exciting to know that there is a place that values the works of beginning playwrights.”

“All of the works presented have a tie to our past participation with KCACTF. Audience members will get to see the best moments from our original works in the past,” Hoke said. “Most of the work is rated PG-13, or ridiculous, or incredibly touching. The final piece of the evening will be my most popular Irene Ryan scene, and it is rated R, but we’ll give the audience a chance to leave before we launch into it,” Hoke explained.
