No sweat; Longhorns blast SW Heights

Holcomb Lady Longhorns 51 – Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs 26

Haley Heydman and the Holcomb Lady Longhorns overwhelmed Southwestern Heights in the opening minutes Tuesday night, scoring the game’s first 11 points and building a 19-1 lead in the first quarter en route to a 51-26 win. After the opening outburst, though, the Longhorns struggled to put the Mustangs away, leading by 15 at the end of the first quarter, 16 at halftime and 17 points after three quarters. Holcomb held Heights to just two fourth quarter points to build the lead to the final margin of 25.

Taylor Deniston led the Lady Longhorns with 19 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half, and Heydman, who had 12 points in the first half, finished with 17.

Holcomb remains undefeated at 6-0, heading into Friday’s game at Colby. The Eagles are 3-4 and coming off a 44-33 loss at Goodland, a team the Lady Longhorns defeated 75-51 in December. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. Friday and our pregame show will begin at 6:15 from Colby on KBUF.

 

Holcomb Longhorns 66 – Southwestern Heights Mustangs 54

An 11-0 run in the 3rd quarter and a 14-0 run in the 4th quarter helped Holcomb break open a close game and the Longhorns downed the Mustangs 66-54 Tuesday night. Holcomb led just 27-26 at halftime, and 2:30 into the 2nd half, Heights held a 3-point lead, 32-29. But the Longhorns scored the next 11 points and led by 7 at the end of the 3rd period, 48-41.  Holcomb then used a 14-0 outburst over a three-minute stretch of the final quarter to build a 65-43 lead. Longhorn head coach Chad Novack then turned the game over to his reserves and the Mustangs scored of the 11 of the game’s final 12 points to make the final score, 66-54.

Heath Tucker led Holcomb with 23 points, Trey Sleep added 14 and Dalton Gottschalk had 12. Nate Johnsrud led Heights with 14 points.

The 5-1 Longhorns are back on the road Friday to take on the winless Colby Eagles. The boys’ game follows the girls’ contest and you can hear all the action on KBUF.
