Goodland, Kan. (www.westernkansasnews.com)–It was a tough night Tuesday for the Scott City Beavers, as both the boys and girls teams fell to the Cowboys and Cowgirls of Goodland. The Lady Beavers fell 66-33 to the No. Cowgirls, while Scott City’s 38-game league winning streak came to a halt in a 46-42 setback.

In the first game of the night, both teams had no issues scoring in the first half. Scott City rallied in the opening eight minutes to tie the game at 12 with 2:20 remaining in the first quarter. After the Goodland timeout, the Cowgirls took over, scoring the next 11 points over a two-minute stretch, and led 23-12 with 7:48 left before halftime. The run ended up being a 17-2 run in a five-minute span, but the Lady Beavers did their best to stay within 15, and trailed 40-25 at recess. Goodland stole the ball to begin the second half, got the layup, and never looked back. In a six-minute stretch of the third and fourth periods, the Cowgirls scored 15 straight to force a running clock in the final quarter. Their largest margin ended up being at 33, which was the ending margin at 66-33. Goodland (10-5, 3-3 GWAC) got three double figure scorers, led by Hope Cochran and Kate-Lynn King with 13 points, while Brianna White had 11. Scott City (2-13, 0-7) was led by Bailey Nickel’s game-high 21 points.

The boys game turned out to be a tightly-contested game between the Beavers and Cowboys. Goodland scored the final eight points of the first period to take an 11-8 lead heading into the second quarter. Scott City fought back with 14 of the next 15 points in a two-minute span, taking a 22-12 lead with 5:43 to go before halftime. It looked as though the Beavers were settled down and would cruise to the win. The Cowboys had other plans though, scoring eight of the final 10 points of the half to cut the Scott City deficit to 24-20 at the break. In the second half, the Beavers were unable to get their pattened runs going, as missed layups and Goodland’s second chance looks caught up, despite a 32-29 lead going into the final eight minutes. After Scott City made it a five-point game early in the final period, the Cowboys tied the the game on a quick five-point spurt ina minute. A Brett Meyer three gave the Beavers a 37-34 lead with 6:12 to go, but the Cowboys took the lead for good with eight unanswered to lead 42-37 halfway through the final quarter. Scott City (13-2, 6-1) had their chances to tie or take the lead in the final minutes, but were unable to capitalize on Goodland’s missed one-and-ones toward the end. The loss for the Beavers snapped a 38-game win streak in conference play, dating back to February of 2010, when they were in the MSAA. Thirty-six of the wins came in GWAC play. It was also Goodland’s first win over Scott City since 2004, when they defeated the Beavers in the Orange & Black Tournament in Colby, 14 meetings ago.
