Strong Comeback fuels split
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-First-year Garden City High School girls’ volleyball Coach Shandra Sanders got a glimpse of how good her team can be in 2013.
The good: A comeback 29-27, 18-25, 25-23 win over Newton at the New Garden Tuesday night. In fact, the Buffs overcame a pretty sizable deficit to win the first set.
“We can definitely be the comeback kids,” Senior outside hitter Taryn Tempel said afterwards. “But we can’t do that against the really good teams and expect to win.”
That brings us to the second match vs. Salina Central. The Mustangs never trailed in a two set (20-25, 19-25) sweep.
In the final set, it seemed as if the Buffs might force a decisive frame after pulling to withing one at 20-19. But an errant serve quickly swung the momentum and the Mustangs scored the final five points.
“Whenever we really trust the system, we play really really really well,” Tempel said. “And when we start doubting each other and not following the system is when things start to fall apart.”
