Steve Nufer
Steve Nufer, 63, died Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born June 30, 1951 at Dodge City, the son of Leo and Regina Johanna (Smith) Nufer. He was a lifetime Dodge City resident and received his Bachelors from Ft. Hays State University. He worked at Interstate Battery in Dodge City for 30 years at numerous positions and most recently as the office manager. He was previously a Deputy Sheriff in Hodgeman County and a substitute teacher at several area schools.
He attended the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City and St. Andrew Catholic Church, Wright, Kansas and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2955, Dodge City. He was an avid golfer, playing in all fifty States as well as Canada and Mexico. He played in the Merchant Golf League, Couple Golf League and in 2014 joined the Amateur Golf Tour winning a tournament that same year. He was also a member of the Triple Threat Bowling League and current President of the Dodge City Community College Endowment Association. For many years he was the track photographer at McCarty Speedway in Dodge City.
On July 17, 1976 he married Eileen Durler at Dodge City. She preceded him in death on January 3, 2007.
Survivors include: 3 daughters, Amanda Nufer, Dodge City, Stephanie Johnson and husband Chris, Ellis, Kansas and Erica Nufer, Dodge City; a brother, Leonard and wife Lois, Weatherford, Texas; 3 sisters, Annetta Pena and husband Jesus “Chewy”, Silver City, New Mexico, Clara Nufer, Dodge City and Jane Moses, Wichita; 2 grandchildren, Allen Johnson and Tyson Nufer; and close friend, Rosie Korf.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim that died in Vietnam in 1968.
Vigil Service followed by Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:00 pm Thursday, March 12, 2015 both at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Friday at the church with Fr. Wesley Schawe presiding. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Thursday at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City.
