Staying inside; Scott City turns to Dirks to lead wrestling program

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The search for a new head wrestling coach in Scott City did not take them far. If the current system isn’t broke, why fix it? With the approval by the USD 466 Board of Education Monday night, Aaron Dirks was officially approved as the head coach for the Scott City Wrestling program. Dirks is the seventh head coach in the programs history that started in the 1968-69 season. He replaces legendary coach Jon Lippelmann, who retired in May after a 34-year stint as head coach and was in the program for 38 years.

Dakota Hayes was also approved as an assistant coach for the high school team. Brice Eisenhour will also stay on staff. All coaches on staff have wrestled under Lippelmann.

Dirks is no stranger to the Beaver wrestling program. He has served as an assistant for the last six seasons, and is a 2002 graduate of Scott Community High School, where he was a wrestler in the program.

Prior to coming back to Scott City in 2012, Dirks had previously served as an assistant coach at Ottawa High School for five seasons and Emporia High School for two seasons. He currently teaches Government at Scott Community High School, and is also an assistant coach for the track program.

Scott City returns five of their six qualifiers, or 77 of their 98.5 team points at state, that helped them win the Class 321A State Tournament in Hays last February.
