Softball Roundup 5-6-14

Goddard, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-It wasn’t their ace’s best day, but Garden City still rallied to take one.

Dusti Befort’s struggles in game one weren’t the only reason Garden City lost to Goddard Eisenhower 9-2. She didn’t have much help behind her-thanks to four errors in the field.

In game two, freshman Abbi Dart was strong-fanning six as Garden City won 3-2.

“We never lost our drive or energy,” Dart said afterwards. “We stayed composed.”

Composed is right, especially in a 1-1 game going into the top of the sixth. Dart and Shai Cartmill started the inning with back-to-back singles. Shea Nordby’s sacrifice seemed like a pretty routine play. But a booted ball allowed the go-ahead runs to score.

In the first game, Dusti Befort’s solo shot in the first, gave Garden City an early 1-0 lead. That lead swelled to 2-0 in the third when Jamie St. Clair scored an an error. But the wheels fell off in the home half. Eisenhower plated three runs there, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Befort allowed seven earned runs on nine hits including a home run in six innings of work.
