Slow start, strong finish; Lady Demons win opener
Wichita, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Scoreless at the half, Dodge City girls soccer coach Charles Johnson could only shake his head. But as the final 40 minutes proved, it’s never too late to make a good first impression.
Senior forward Scarlett Real netted two second half goals and the Lady Demons roared to a 3-1 victory over Wichita Southeast in the first round of the Wichita Trinity Classic.
“We started out very slow,” Johnson said afterwards. “But we definitely picked things up after half time.”
It all started four minutes in the second half when Jackie Gonzalez snared a rebound and scorched the net from 10 yards out.
“That definitely got us going,” Johnson said.
After giving up an equalizer just moments later, Real came to the rescue.
“I’m really proud of how we played,” the senior said afterwards. “We worked together as a team and finished strong in the second half.”
With the win, Dodge City advances to the semifinals to play Wichita Southeast Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.
