Setback on the road; Busters fall in McCook

McCook, Neb (westernkansasnews.com)-From the get go, Wednesday was a much different feel for Chris Finnegan’s team. 

“Just one of those days,” Finnegan said afterwards. “We just weren’t ready to play today.”

Unfortunately the results prove his point. Garden City mustered just five hits in an 8-0 loss to McCook. 

The Indians got things going in the third. With two on and two out, Zach Barton’s error allowed Manny Menocal to reach and load the bases. That setup Casey Philphot’s two-run double-capping of a three-run inning. 

McCook padded the lead in the fourth when Dalton Cook’s throwing error allowed Ty Sackett to score from third. Then in the sixth-Sackett led off with a double and came around to score on a Darron Davis RBI single. Davis would add another run-scoring hit in the eight; part of a three-run inning that seemingly put the game out of reach. 

“We swung the bats okay,” Finnegan said. “We just didn’t get the hits in key situations.”

Busters starter Josh Thomas lasted just three innings-allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking two. 

The loss dropped Garden City to 32-19 overall. McCook improved to 14-26.
