Senior Night Special; Scott City blanks Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With the District 16 title on the line, Scott City and Cimarron met for the fourth time in the last five seasons at Darner Field. Just like the previous three meetings, it was all Beavers, as Scott City would pick up a 49-0 shutout win over he Bluejays on Senior Night.

The Beavers would take advantage of short field for their opening score of the night. A two-play, 20 yard drive was capped off by a 17-yard toss from Trey O’Neil to Brett Meyer with 10:07 left in the first quarter. Tre Stewart booted in the extra point to make it 7-0 Scott City. They would score once more in the opening period. It would result in another O’Neil to Meyer hookup, this time from 10 yards out, as Meyer caught it nine and a half yards deep in the endzone to make it 13-0 with 3:47 left in the opening period, as Stewart kicked in another PAT.

Scott City (9-0) would have a bizarre second quarter. Cimarron kept the ball for the majority of the period. The Beavers would end up scoring 21 points, had two offensive scores, and ran only five plays in the period. Senior James Jurgens scored his first touchdown of the season with 9:10 left before halftime on a three yard run to push the lead to 21-0, following the Stewart PAT. Then with 6:21 remaining before halftime, the Beavers scored their third non-offensive touchdown in as many weeks. Chantz Yager took a punt 62 yards for the score for Scott City’s second touchdown of the period. The Beavers would tack on one more score before the break. Sloan Baker got into the senior scoring spree, catching a 57-yard pass from O’Neil with 2:43 left before halftime to make it 34-0, and Stewart knocked in another point after try to make the score 35-0. 

In the third quarter, the Beavers put up two more scores to force a running clock midway through the period. The first score came from Cooper Griffith on a five-yard run with 10:26 left int he third quarter, and Wyatt Kropp capped off the scoring with a four-yard rush with 6:03 left in the period, and Stewart booted in both extra points to give the Beavers a 49-0 lead. 

Cimarron (6-3) had one threat in the fourth quarter, but were turned back at the Beaver 10 yard line on a fumble midway in the period.

For the Bluejays, Nick Ast was three-of nine for 42 yards with an interceptions. AJ Cooper caught all three passes. Colton Lumpkins was the leading rusher for Cimarron, as he had 42 yards on 13 carries. The Bluejays had a total of 145 yards of offense unofficially.

Trey O’Neil completed all seven of his passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Sloan Baker had two catches for 73 yards and a score, and Brett Meyer had 51 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Marshal Hutchins finished as the leading ground gainer with 74 yards on four carries. The Beavers ended up with 414 yards of offense unofficially.

With the win, Scott City has now won 19 straight district games dating back to week nine of the 2008 seaosn. The Beavers have now capped off an undefeated regular season five out of the last six seasons, and have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last nine years. 

Scott City and Cimarron will begin the playoffs in the Bi-District round on Tuesday. Cimarron will play at Hoisington, while Scott City hosts Ellsworth. The Beavers will kickoff with the Bearcats at 6 pm at Darner Field.
