Segovia leaves GCHS; search underway for new AD

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-After five years of serving as Athletics Director for Garden City High School, Martin Segovia submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday. 

“The district received a resignation letter from Martin Segovia on June 18,” district spokesman Roy Cessna said. “We are now in the process of trying to fill the position of Associate Principal and Athletics Director.”

During his five-year run, Garden City High School sports sustained consistent success. Three years into his reign, the football team, directed by Head Coach Brian Hill (hired by Segovia) landed within one victory from playing for the school’s first state title in more than a decade. 

Jacy Holloway’s boys basketball team ended a six-year, state-tournament drought in 2013 when they knocked off Dodge City in the substate championship game, earning a spot in the 6A quarterfinals. 

And no program has defined the school’s rise on the athletics front that the wrestling team, who won their third straight state championship this past season under Head Coach Carlos Prieto (also hired by Segovia). 

As for a timetable on when the district will name his replacement: 

“We hope to have someone in place as quickly as possible,” Cessna added. 

The school board meets on June 30 at 7:30 a.m. to officially accept Segovia’s resignation letter.
