Season Ends for Buffaloes With Loss to Wichita Heights in Regional Semi-Final
(Wichita) (westernkansasnews.com)-Playing one of their best games on the season and in recent years, the Garden City Buffalo Baseball team concluded their 2012 season with a 1-0 loss to the eventual Regional Champion Wichita Heights last night at Adams Field-Westurban Complex in Wichita. The Heights Falcons followed up the win over Garden City with a 7-3 victory over the Regional host Wichita East Aces to advance to the 6A State Tournament May 25-26 at Hoglund Stadium in Lawrence on the University of Kansas campus. The semi-final game with the Buffaloes and the Falcons was one of those near picture perfect games, with superb pitching by both teams and the defensive plays and effort were just outstanding. Wichita Heights won the game in the bottom of the first inning off an error, putting the Falcon batter Joshua Farrington on base, then advancing to third on a past ball and a wild pitch, then scoring the run on a 4-3 ground out RBI from Brandon Mercer that gave the Falcons the 1-0 lead and it was all the Falcons needed for the victory. Its was great pitching from Buffalo junior Edgar Montoya and great defense from Garden City that kept Heights in check the rest of the way, with the line score of 1 run on 1 hit, one error and one runner LOB. The Garden City line score had the Buffaloes with no runs, on 6 hits, one error and left 7 runners stranded. Coach Bill Wilson said it just came down to the point of not getting the key hit in a gap or out of the infield or Garden City may have been playing for the Regional title. The Buffaloes end their season at 10-11 third in the Western Athletic Conference, and will say goodbye to 8 seniors, but they have a great nucleus returning next year.
