Scott City’s Bowers signs with Friends

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering his freshman season, Gabe Bowers had little experience on the wrestling mat. An opportunity on varsity early in his high school year saw him qualify for state in his first season, and the rest is history.

Bowers made it official on Wednesday, as he signed with the Friends University Falcons for wrestling and powerlifting.

He is a three-year state qualifier in wrestling, winning a match in the 2018 Class 3-2-1A State Tournament in which Scott City won the state title. While he was a match shy of qualifying his sophomore year, he came back and placed fifth his junior year at 285 pounds in Class 4A. So far this year, Bowers is 32-3, and has collected a 92-34 record over his career.

In powerlifting, Bowers is around 350 for bench, about 500 for squat and clean max is around 330. His numbers could put him in contention for an individual state title in March in the state powerlifting championships.

Friends is just starting up new programs in wrestling and powerlifting, and will compete for the first time next year.

Bowers plans on going into chiropracting.
