Scott City wins home GWAC triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–While Thursday was a GWAC opener for both Holcomb and Scott City, it was the middle of the GWAC portion of the schedule for Cimarron. Each match would be competitive. In the end, Scott City would go 2-0 on the day with wins of 25-23, 22-25, 26-24 over the Bluejays, and after their senior night ceremonies, swept Holcomb with a 25-21, 25-18 thriller. The Longhorns would knock off Cimarron 25-12, 21-25, 20-25 in the other match of the night.
To begin the day, Scott City would face a solid Cimarron squad. The Lady Beavers never trailed the opening set, as they jumped out 6-0 early on, and built their lead to 9-2. Cimarron slowly got bakck into the match and pulled to within 18-15. Scott City took a 20-16 lead, but couldn’t put away the Lady Bluejays. They would work their way back to within 24-23, before Scott City won 25-23. The Lady Beavers jumped out early 5-0 to begin the second set. Cimarron put together an 8-2 run to lead 9-7. Scott City bounced back to lead 13-12 midway, and led 15-13, before another Bluejay run put them on top 16-15. They never trailed the second set and forced a third with a 25-22 win. There were seven lead changes and nine ties in teh final set of th match. Cimarron took a 13-10 lead midway through the third set. Out of a Lady Beaver timeout, Scott City would use an 8-1 run to lead 18-14. However, the Lady Bluejays weren’t finished. Trailing 22-19, they scored five of the next six points to get set poitn at 24-23. The Lady Beavers would close out with three straight to win 26-24 in a thriller. Avery Lewis had 12 kills, while Peyton Gentry had eight kills, and Kendall Gentry had four kills and three service aces for Scott City.
After the senior night ceremonies, the Lady Beavers turned their attention to Holcomb. The first set would be a battle, as there were 11 ties in the first 21 points to go along with four lead changes. Scott City grabbed the early 3-1 lead, only to see the Lady Longhorns use a 10-3 rally to lead 11-6. Trailing 13-8, the Lady Beavers responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 14. It would go back and forth for the next seven points. At 21 all, Scott City closed out the set with the final four points to take a 25-21 set one victory. Holcomb grabbed a lead of 9-5 in the second set on the heels of a 7-1 run. After that, the Lady Beavers made a run. A run that saw Scott City flip the script wiht a 14-3 run to lead 19-12. Avery Lewis would have a run where she had six consecutive kills and seven of the teams eight points in the middle of the run. Holcomb would get to within 20-16, before Scott City closed it out with a 25-18 win to complete the sweep. Avery Lewis had 12 kills, while Peyton Getnry had eight kills. Piper Fox had two block points and Kendall Gentry had two service aces to go along with three kills.
Scott City is 2-0 in GWAC play, and 11-7 overall, as they have a week off before they head to Ulysses to face the Tigers and Hugoton in a GWAC triangular next Thursday. Holcomb is now 8-7 overall, 1-1 in conference play, as they will host their own tournament on Saturday, and Cimarron is now 2-2 in conference play and 10-4 overall, and will also be in the Holcomb tournament on Saturday.
