Scott City wins 2018 GWAC Wrestling Tournament
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in the eight-year history of the GWAC Dual Tournament, the tournament winner was someone other than Colby or Goodland. Saturday’s GWAC Dual Tournament saw the Scott City Beavers rip through every team they faced, going undefeated on the day as a team with a 5-0 record. Jurgens, and Hayes are three-time league individual champions. It was Scott City’s first league title since 2010, when they won the final MSAA tournament. Colby, who has won the tournament five out of the first seven years, finished in second.
Scott City would place five up on the top of the awards stand, and had all 12 wrestlers place in the top three. Freshman Marshal Faurot at 126, Kaden Wren at 132, Jarret Jurgens at 160, Wyatt Hayes at 170, and Kyle Sherwood at 195 went 5-0 on the day. The Beavers had five others place second and two finish in third place.
Ulysses took home three top medalists, and finished fourth in the duals, losing the head-to-head with Goodland for third place. Quentin Pauda at 106, Corbyn Pauda at 113 and Ayston Perez at 285 took home individual titles for the Tigers.
Holcomb’s Chance Rodriguez repeated as a league tournament individual champion at 182. He went 5-0 on the day to help lead the Longhorns to a fifth place finish.
Saturday marked the final regular season tournament for the teams. Colby, Goodland and Scott City will be at the Class 3-2-1A Regional Tournament February 16-17 in Goodland, while Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses will be at the Class 4A Regional in Arkansas City on February 16-17.
