Scott City Volleyball splits matches in Dighton

Dighton, Kan.–(WesternKansasNews.com)–The 2013 version of the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team is one of the youngest teams to take the court in quite some time. For fourth year head coach Jordan Dreiling, just three seniors comprise of the varsity team, the fewest in her tenure thus far. Tuesday night in Dighton, Scott City took the court for the first time this season, facing Ness City and Dighton.

Their first opponent would be the Lady Eagles of Ness City. The match would see some big momentum swings not only through one set, but throughout the match. Ness City would take the first set, pulling away with a 25-19 win. In the second set, it looked as though the Lady Beavers were in trouble early on, but found a way halfway through to take the lead and never look back, forcing a third and decisive set with a 25-18 victory. All the dramatics would be saved for the winner take all third set. The Lady Eagles looked like they would run away with the set and match, with leads of 15-6 and 20-10. Scott City rallied, with 10 of the next 12 points to pull to within 22-20. Ness City had match points at 24 and 25, while the Lady Beavers had match points at 26 and 27, before getting the match point to win 28-26 in a thriller.

In their final match of the night against Dighton, the Lady Hornets would prevail with identical set victories 25-21, 25-21. Dighton, a Class 1A, Division II state tournament qualifier in 2012, would go back and forth with the Lady Beavers in both sets. Scott City looked like they would force a third set with a 21-19 lead, but six straight from the Lady Hornets would put the match away.

Scott City (1-1) has a week off before hosting GWAC foe Ulysses in a dual Thursday, September 12 at Scott Community High School.
