Scott City volleyball picks up two wins in home triangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Having a week off from competition may have been what the doctor ordered for the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball squad. Following a tough nine-match stretch over five days, Scott City played host to Goodland and Ulysses on Tuesday at the Scott Community Events Center. The Lady Beavers were able to defend home court, as they picked up wins of 15-25, 25-18, 25-17 against Ulysses, and followed that up with a sweep of Goodland 25-18-25-17. Ulysses would defeat the Cowgirls in the middle match in a competitive battle 25-23, 26-24.

Starting off against Ulysses, the Lady Beavers took an early 6-4 lead. The Lady Tigers turned the tables with seven straight to lead 12-6. Ulysses would take advantage of Scott City errors, and built their lead late in the set with an 8-3 run to close the set with a 25-15 win. In the second set, the Lady Beavers came out swinging, and never looked back after trailing 2-1 early on. A 6-1 run early on the second set put them up 7-3, and an 8-2 run in the middle pushed their lead to 15-7. It was virtually back and forth the rest of the way, as Scott City took a 25-18 lead in set two. The Lady Beavers never trailed in the third set, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. The closest the Lady Tigers got would be 4-3, and after that, Scott City would gradually pull away with mini-runs and prevail 25-17. Megan Trout had 10 kills, while Avery Lewis and Peyton Gentry had nine kills, and Kinleigh Wren had six kills and three service aces.

In the finale, Scott City would be in a competitve first set with Goodland. Nine ties and eight lead changes made it tight for over half of the opening set. The Lady Beavers took control of the set after it was tied at 13, using a 6-1 run to lead 19-14. They would slowly pull away for the 25-18 win. In the second set, the Cowgirls would jump out to an early 2-0 lead, only to see Scott City score six straight. After Goodland tied the set at six, the Lady Beavers used a 13-5 run to build their lead to 19-11. Both teams put six points up on the board to close things out, as Scott City came away with the 25-17 win in set two. Megan Trout had eight kills, Avery Lewis had seven kills four service aces. Scott City had 10 aces in the match.

After Tuesday, Scott City is now 5-6 on the season, and will be in Hoxie on Thursday for a triangular with Hoxie and Hill City.
