Scott City Volleyball finishes 1-2 at Colby
Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their second quafhedrangular in three days, the Scott City Lady Beavers ventured northwest Thursday to Colby to face the host school Colby, as well as Hoxie and Oakley. Similar to Tuesday, the Lady Beavers would finish 1-2 on the day with losses to Colby and Hoxie, and defeating Oakley.
Their first match of the day was against the No. 2 team in Class 1A, Division I Hoxie. The Lady Indians returned a bulk of their team that finished fourth in state a year ago. Scott City played them tougher than any team during the day. Hoxie took the first set 25-17, despite it being close for a majority of the set. In set two, the Lady Beavers pushed them farther, but fell short 25-20.
Scott City would have a short turnaround and faced the host school Colby. The Lady Eagles lost a good sized portion of their team from a year ago. Colby trailed early in both sets, but made a comeback and won 25-17. In the second set, the Lady Beavers tried playing catch up for most of the set, and fell 25-18.
In their final set of the evening, Oakley was the foe. They returned a bulk of their team from a year ago, but Scott City put together their first two-set sweep of the year. The Lady Beavers put together a string of runs in the first set to win 25-13. In the second set, Oakley would push Scott City early on, but the Beavers got things rolling and never looked back by thumping the Lady Plainsmen 25-12.
In the other matches of the day, Colby defeated Oakley 25-9, 25-17 and fell to Hoxie 25-16, 25-12. Hoxie swept Oakley 25-15, 25-15. The Lady Indians finished the day 3-0, Colby 2-1, Scott City 1-2 and Oakley 0-3.
After Thursday, Scott City is 3-6 on the season, and will compete in the Liberal Invitational Saturday. In pool competition, they’ll take on the host school Liberal at 9:30, Hugoton at 10:30, Wichita Southeast at 1, and Meade at 2. The final round begins at approximately 3 pm.
