Scott City volleyball drops two in home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday’s GWAC Triangular in Scott City saw Hugoton and Ulysses make the trip to Scott City, as the teams battled for a second consecutive Thursday in GWAC play. The triangular would see Hugoton go undefeated on the day, defeating Scott City 25-18, 27-25, and Ulysses 25-9, 26-24. Ulysses would defeat Scott City in the final match of the day 26-24, 25-20.
The Lady Beavers knew last night they would be down starter Alli Brunswig, who was unavailable due to an injury in practice on Wednesday. Early on in their match against Hugoton, Scott City started off about as well as you could. The Lady Beavers would start off on a tear, leading 9-0, behind five kills and a block point. However, Hugoton would make a small run, scoring six of the next seven points. That would be their first run. The Lady Eagles slowly chipped away at the deficit. Trailing 18-13, Hugoton closed out on a tear, scoring the final 12 points of the opening set to win 25-18. They scored the first two of the second set, before Scott City would put a run together to go up 5-4. Tied at nine, the Lady Eagles would use a 6-1 run to build a 15-10 lead, and a run of 5-1 pushed their lead to 21-14. The Lady Beavers rallied back, and used an 11-2 run to get set point at 25-24. Hugoton would score the final three points of the match to take the second set and the match 27-25. Kennedy Holstein had five kills, while Ella Rumford and four kills and two aces, and Brooklynne Zielke had four kills for Scott City.
In their final match of the day, the Lady Beavers would face Ulysses for a second time this year. For a majority of the match, it would be tightly contested, as there were eight lead changes and 19 ties. The opening set would be close early on, as Scott City would eventually open up a 13-6 lead. Leading 17-13, the Lady Beavers saw Ulysses go on an 8-2 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Lady Tigers would have set point at 24-21, when Scott City rallied for three straight to tie the set at 24. Ulysses would close it out with two points and win 26-24. The second set would see neither side lead by more than two points for a majority of the set. Trailing the Lady Beavers 18-16, the Lady Tigers would close the second set and the match off with a 9-2 run and take the match 25-20. Ella Rumford had four kills for Scott City, while Kennedy Holstein had three kills and two service aces.
Scott City is 12-10 on the year, and will be at Goodland next Thursday for their third GWAC Triangular, facing Colby and Goodland.
