Scott City visits Colby in key district and GWAC matchup

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The gap has closed between Scott City and Colby over the last few seasons. Despite the recent run by the Beavers over the Eagles, Colby is entering tonight’s game with Scott City as the slight favorite in a matchup between two Great West Activities Conference foes that has district ramifications.

Scott City is in foreign territory enterting tonight’s game. They saw a 35-game district win streak end last Friday night in a 28-13 loss to the Beloit Trojans at Darner Field. It was their first October loss since 2008. Beloit led 14-0 after the first quarter, and 14-6 through three quarters. The Beavers had a chance in the fourth quarter down 20-13, but the Trojans converted three fourth downs on their last scoring drive to pick up the win. Scott City was limited to 208 yards of offsnes, and 163 on the ground. Beloit ran for 199 yards and had 262 yards of offense in te game. Parker Gooden had Scott City’s 16th non-offensive touchdown since 2013 with an 88-yard kickoff return early in the fourth quarter. So far this year, the Beavers have given up 125 yards a game and just over six points, while averaging 27 points and around 350 yards a game. 

Colby is 6-0 for a second straight year after a 55-14 win over the Russell Broncos last Friday night at Dennen Field. The Eagles flew out to a 41-7 win at the half behind a 27-point first quarter. They rolled up 491 yards of offense, with 461 coming on the ground. Russell scored in the second and fourth quarters, and were limited to 101 yards of offense, with 74 coming on the ground. This year, Calvin Stapp has accounted for 14 offensive touchdowns, 12 on the ground, and has rushed for under 800 yards for a team that averages 31 points a game, and have allowed 15 points a game. 

Scott City leads the all-time series 27-15, and has won 15 straight in the series. Colby’s last win came in 1999, when they won at Scott City 14-7. 

A Colby win tonight gives them the district championship, which would be their first since 2015, when they were in Class 4A, District II. A Scott City win secures their 14th straight playoff apperance. Even in a loss, both teams are in prime position to make the playoffs.
