Scott City, Ulysses split doubleheader
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the heart of the regular season has approached, two long time foes met up Friday night in Scott City, as the Beavers played host to the Ulysses Tigers. Both teams earned a split, as the winning teams pulled away in the second half, with the Lady Tigers picking up a 51-28 victory, while the Beaver boys won 81-50.
After Scott City got the first points of the game, Ulysses scored the next seven. Yet, the Lady Beavers fought back in the first half. After trailing 11-8 after the opening period, they tied the game early in the second quarter at 12. The Lady Tigers would close the final 4:27 of the first half on a 10-5 run to lead 22-17 at the break. Ulysses (3-7, 2-3 GWAC) scored the first six points of the second period, and saw their lead grow. A 13-6 run in the third stanza pushed the Lady Tiger lead to 35-23 after three quarters. Scott City (2-6, 0-4) was unable to get any point production in the second half, scoring only 12 points. The Lady Tigers led by as many as 24, and won 51-28, winning for the second time in three games. Ulysses saw two players finish in double figures, led by Jessi Arnold with 18 points, and Carolina Gallegos with 15. Scott City got a team-high nine points from Bailey Latta.

In the finale, it took a little while for the Beavers to settle in and take charge. After leading early on 10-3, Ulysses scored seven straight to tie the game at 10, before Scott City (7-1, 3-1 GWAC) scored eight of the last 12 to lead 18-14 after the first period. About halfway through the second period, the Beavers started pulling away. After Ulysses (5-5, 2-3 GWAC) pulled to within 26-22 with 4:01 left before halftime, Scott City closed the first half on a 15-7 run to lead 41-28 at intermission. They scored the next seven points in the game, and eventually saw their lead grow to 22 points late in the third quarter. The Tigers scored the first three points of the fourth period, and then Scott City put the dagger in by using a 16-1 run to close the game out to win 81-50, their 10th straight over the Tigers in the series. Scott City had three in double figures, led by Brett Meyer with 20 points, Trey O’Neil with 19 and Sloan Baker with 12. Ulysses got 12 points off the bench from Tre Pauda, 11 from Jason Borthwick and 10 by Tregg Rodriguez.

Up next for Scott City will be Pine Creek for both the boys and girls on Thursday in the Paul Wintz/Tom Bowen Orange & Black Classic in Colby. The boys will play at 3 pm, and the girls at 4:45 at Colby High School. Ulysses will see their girls host Garden City on Tuesday, and their boys open up with Valley Center Thursday night in the Valley Center January Jam.
