Scott City, Ulysses Split Doubleheader
Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–To kick off the final month of regular season competition, the Scott City Beavers and Ulysses Tigers met for the second and final time this season in Great West Activities Conference play. On winter homecoming night for Ulysses, the Lady Tigers avenged an early season loss with a 62-42 win, while the Beaver won convincingly 72-47.
The first quarter saw Ulysses start off well, leading 9-3 six minutes in. Scott City would get the Lady Tigers into foul trouble in the first quarter, drawing 11 fouls, but were unable to take advantage. In the first 12 minutes of the ballgame, the Lady Beavers did not hit a single field goal, yet were still in the ballgame, trailing 20-10 halfway through the second period. Ulysses would begin pulling away in the second quarter, taking a 33-20 halftime lead. In the second half, Scott City found themselves in a scoring slump again, as the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Beavers 19-7 to take a 52-27 lead into the final quarter. Scott City would outscore Ulysses 15-10 in the final quarter, including scoring the games final nine points, but it proved to be too much to overcome for the Lady Beavers. Ulysses (4-12, 2-5 GWAC) finished with three players in double figures, led by sophomore Carolina Gallegos with a game-high 18 points, while Morgan Price and Chisholm Branscup chipped in 10. Scott City (2-12, 1-5) was paced with Shanaya Hoeme’s 15 points.
After trading leads early on, Scott City used a 10-0 run and an 8-0 run to lead 26-9 early in the second quarter. The Beavers would prove to be too much for Ulysses to handle, as Scott City used an 9-0 run in the second quarter to propel them to a 51-25 lead at the break. It was the second straight game the Beavers hit the 50-point plateau in the first half. The third quarter was a 16-point output for Scott City and led 67-35 heading into the final period. With a running clock in the final quarter, the Tigers scored the first 10 points of the quarter, but didn’t get closer that 22 the rest of the way. Scott City (13-1, 6-0 GWAC) saw Drew Kite score 22 points, including a 10-for-10 performance from the field. Brett O’Neil added 18 for the Beavers. Ulysses (7-9, 3-4) also had two players reach double figures, led by Kyler Barlow with 14 and Tregg Rodriguez with 10.
Ulysses will travel to Dodge City on Tuesday night, while Scott City returns home to face Goodland for the first time this season.
