Scott City turns to Meyer to lead high school cross country program

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City didn’t have to look far to find its successor for the Scott City cross country program. The Beavers will be led by one of their former runners, as 2013 SCHS graduate Joey Meyer was approved by the USD 466 Board of Education during a special meeting on Monday, to be the head high school cross country coach. He was an assistant to the middle school cross country team in 2019.

Meyer made the switch to cross country his junior year in high school and it paid off. He placed eighth his junior year, and in 2012, placed fifth at state and led the boys team to a second place finish at Rim Rock Farm in Class 3A. While he didn’t run in college, Meyer played basketball at Colby Community College and finished his education at Fort Hays State University. After one year as a first grade teach in the Perry-Lecompton school district, he moved back to Scott City last fall to be the first grade teacher. Meyer will make the transition to fifth grade in the school district this fall.

Meyer takes over for Kevin Reese, his high school cross country and distance coach in track. Reese resigned earlier in April after 13 seasons as the head cross country coach.
