Scott City turns to McCormick to lead girls basketball program

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in three seasons, the Scott City Lady Beaver Basketball program will have a new basketball coach. Sarah McCormick, who has been out of coaching for the past two seasons, will take over the Lady Beavers basketball program for the 2015-16 season. She will replace Shelby Crawford, who had back to back 3-18 seasons in his two seasons. Crawford will be the eighth grade girls basketball coach.

McCormick spent five seasons as the head coach at Garden Plain. She led the Lady Owls to an impressive 101-21 record, three state tournament appearances, a third place finish in 2010, and a 24-2 record and a state runner-up finish in 2013 in Class 3A. Prior to serving as the Garden Plain head coach, McCormick spent two years as an assistant at Maize, and six years as an assistant at Garden Plain under John Darrow.

Her collegiate playing career included playing at Independence Community College, when they played for the NJCAA National Championship, and played for now UTEP Lady Miners head women’s basketball coach Keitha Adams, then transferred to Eastern Illinois for a year, and finished her playing career at Emporia State, where she played under newly-named Kansas Lady Jayhawk basketball coach Brandon Schneider. McCormick was a grad assistant under Schneider for two years.

While she will be a head coach for the second time, McCormick will teach English at Scott City Middle School. Her husband, Brad will be the new principal at Scott Community High School for the 2015-16 school year. Brad was the Garden Plain Owls head football coach for the previous three seasons. The McCormick’s have three children. Their oldest, daughter Brynn, will be a sixth grader, their second daughter, Peyton will be a fourth grader, and their son Brock, will be entering pre-school in the fall.
