Scott City tennis wins Coaches Classic; volleyball goes 1-2 in Oakley

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The final tune up before regionals was a good one for the Scott City girls tennis team Saturday in Dodge City. Scott City won the nine-team tennis tournament over host school Ashland and Greeley County. For the Lady Beaver volleyball team, they went 1-2 in pool play at the Impact Center in Oakley, just missing out on advancing out of pool play.

In Dodge City, the Lady Beaver tennis wrapped up a week that was rather busy. According to Coach Cheryl Kucharik, the varsity played a total of 33 1/2 hours of tennis in the week. Scott City won the Coaches Classic with 73 points, while Ashland had 60 and Greeley County finished with 57. Top finishers include the No. 1 Doubles team of Krystal Appel and Alma Martinez, and No. 2 Singles player Ximena Ayala, who placed first. Emma Price placed second at No. 1 Singles and the No. 2 Doubles team of Christina and Melanie Tilton placed fourth. The Lady Beavers have won three tournaments in the last few weeks leading up to regionals. Scott City will compete in the Class 3-2-1A Regional Tennis meet in Garden City on Friday and Saturday, hosted by Cimarron.

At Oakley, the Lady Beaver volleyball team participated in the Oakley Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Scott City was in the Impact Center, and went 1-2 on the day. The Lady Beavers had a full week of practice leading into Saturday, and looked improved during the day. They first lost to Wheatland/Grinnell 25-21, 22-25 and 25-19, defeated Quinter 25-9, 25-22 and 25-13. Their final match in pool play vs Goodland determined who would finish second and advance on to the tournament semi-finals. The Cowgirls won both competitive sets 27-25 and 25-21. Wheatland/Grinnell won the tournament, defeating Lakin in the semi-finals. Goodland finished second, defeating Colby in the semi finals, while Lakin knocked off Colby for third place. This week will be another busy week for the Lady Beavers, as they will be in Holcomb Tuesday for a triangular with Holcomb and Southwestern Heights, Thursday in Garden City facing Dodge City, Garden City and Ulysses, and will host the Scott City Invitational on Saturday.
