Scott City takes two from Wichita Trinity

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Over the past few meetings, the Wichita Trinity Knights have had Scott City’s number. Entering Friday night’s doubleheader, the Knights swept the last two doubleheaders. This time around, it would be Scott City picking up two wins. The Lady Beavers would pull away in the fourth quarter for a 54-40 win, while the Beaver boys took control early in a 60-40 win.

It would be Scott City’s biggest test of the season, and it would push them to the end. The Lady Beavers were up to the test early, taking a 12-8 lead after the first period. In the second quarter, the momentum switched to Wichita Trinity. The Lady Knights opened up the first five minutes of the second frame with a 15-3 run to take their largest lead of the night at 23-15 with 3:04 left before halftime. Scott City answered with an 11-4 run to pull to within 27-26 late in the first half. The Lady Knights would hit three free throws to end the half and take a 30-26 lead into the locker room. To open the second half, the Lady Beavers responded with the first six points to lead 32-30 with 5:31 left in the third frame. Wichita Trinity scored seven of the next eight points to lead 37-33 with three minutes left in the third quarter. After that, Scott City would put the clamps down on the Lady Knights. The Lady Beavers closed the game on a 21-3 run over the final 10:12 of the game, en route to a 54-40 game. They held Wichita Trinity to just 10 second half points, including three in the fourth quarter.

Lyndi Rumford led the way for Scott City with 15 points, and Emily Weathers had 14. The Lady Beavers were 12-15 from the line. Austin Broadie led Wichita Trinity with 21 points, and were 12-21 from the free throw line, as they finished with 27 turnovers. Scott City won the rebounding battle 35-33. 

It was Scott City’s first win in seven games against Wichita Trinity. The Lady Beavers improved to 3-0 for the second time in the last three years, and improved to 8-15 in the Roundball Classic. Wichita Trinity is 1-2.

Both teams were coming off tough losses on Thursday night. It would be Scott City who would bounce back from their first defeat of the season. Wichita Trinity would come out and have a 7-4 lead midway through the first quarter, before the Beavers ended the period on a 10-3 run to take a 14-10 lead. The highlight was a Jackson Lewis three-quarters court shot that gave them a four-point lead. Scott City’s run would eventually grow to a 20-3 run, as they led 24-10 with 4:18 left before halftime. The Knights responded with seven of the next points to get to within 10 late in the first half, before the Beavers led 31-17 at recess. Scott City’s lead would get to as big as 20 in the first two minutes of the second half at 37-17, and the closest Wichita Trinity got in the third quarter and the rest of the night was a 41-24 with 2:15 left in the third. The Beavers scored the next eight points to have their largest lead at 49-24 with 7:34 left. It would be the Knights who would outscore Scott City in the fourth quarter 16-13, but the Beavers would prevail 60-40. 

Hunter Yager led the way with 16 points, while Evyan Smith had 12 and Jackson Lewis added 10. The Beavers were 12-19 from the line and had only nine turnovers. Cal Kelly Led Wichita Trinity with 22 points, who shot 7-15 from the free throw line. They had 15 turnovers, and outrebounded Scott City 34-23.

With the win, Scott City ends a two-game skid against the Knights. They are 5-2 in the series all-time, and are 5-0 when they score 60 or more points against Wichita Trinity. The Beavers improved to 14-9 in the Roundball Classic, and scored at least 60 points in the first three games for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Wichita Trinity is 0-3 on the year.

Other scores from the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic on Friday saw Garden City’s girls defeat Coronado 53-39, and the Buffalo boys got a last second layup to win over the Cougars 60-59. Palmer Ridge and Holcomb split, with Palmer Ridge girls defeating the Lady Longhorns 48-35, while the Longhorn boys defeat Palmer Ridge 79-68.

Saturday’s schedule has Wichita Trinity’s girls taking on Palmer Ridge at 11 am, with the boys to follow at 12:45. Holcomb and Coronado on the girls side tip at 2:30, while the Scott City and Garden City girls face off at 4:15. At 6 pm, it’s the boys game of Holcomb against Coronado and the weekend finishes with Garden City and Scott City boys at 7:45.
